Popular Types examinations in Nigeria

This are the most common and popular types of examinations taken by Nigerians. You can use our best exam portal to learn more about them.

JAMB

The legal instrument establishing the Board was promulgated by the Act (No. 2 of 1978) of the Federal Military Government on 13th February, 1978.JAMB conducts Matriculation Examination for entry into all Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education (by whatever name called) in Nigeria. JAMB appoints Examiners, Moderators, Invigilators, members of the Subject Panels and committees and other persons with respect to matriculation examinations and any other matters incidental thereto or connected therewith.

WAEC

The Council conducts several international and national examinations in all member countries except Nigeria where it has shed all but one of its examinations, The West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates in May/June and private candidates in November/December.

NABTEB – NBC/NTC/ANBC/ANTC

The National Business and Technical Examinations Board was established in 1992 to domesticate craft level examinations which were hitherto conducted by City & Guilds, Pittman’s, and Royal Society of Arts all of UK in accordance with the provisions of the National Policy on Education. Its establishment was the climax of an evolutionary process which spanned 15 years from 1977 to 1992 and in which FOUR Government Panels at different times were set up to review the place and structure of public examinations in our educational system.

NECO – Senior School Certificate Examination

This is the examination taken by candidates in their last stage of Secondary School Education. The SSCE is in two categories. One is for candidates in the third and final year of their senior secondary education and it is called SSCE Internal while the Second is SSCE External and is for candidates not in the School system, i.e. Private Candidates.

NECO – Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE)

This is the examination taken by candidates in their last stage of Secondary School Education. The SSCE is in two categories. NECO – National Common Entrance Examination (NCEE)

This examination is administered to pupils in their 6th year of basic education. The purpose of this examination is to select the best candidates from every state of the federation and the federal Capital territory (FCT) for admission into federal Unity colleges. These Colleges are essentially, Secondary schools owned by the Federal Government of Nigeria. Their objective is to foster unity amongst the children of NIGERIA. Two are held annually. Result of the first examination determines candidates that qualify for a second examination based on cut-off marks for each state. The result of the second examination qualifies candidates for admission based on merit, equal state quota and environment considerations.

Nigerian Defence Academy

The vision of the Nigerian Defence Academy is to produce officers with broad-based training in both military and academic subjects designed to serve as a foundation for the future progressive development of officers of the Nigerian Armed Forces. The role of the Academy is to provide each officer cadet with knowledge, skills and values necessary to meet the requirements of a military officer through military, academic and character development. In essence, the Nigerian Defence Academy is an institution where selected young able-bodied men and women are groomed into well educated, courageous, virile and erudite subalterns.

Nigeria Air Force Military School

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) conceived the idea to establish an Educational cell in the early 70s when it realized the need to provide continuous education for its personnel and their dependants. However, in November 1975, NAF established the department of Education and annexed it under the Directorate of Administration. The department operated until the implementation of the NAF Establishment from 1981–1985 in which the Directorate of Education (DOEDN) was established with effect from 6 June 1984.

ICAN

Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria – ICAN is a professional body in Nigeria empowered by law according to act of parliament No. 15 of 1965 to oversee the activities of the body and setting standard requirement for accepting new members to the professional body. ICAN is a member of the International Accounting Standards Committee (IASC) and recently became the member of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), thus adopting the new standard, effective January 2012.

Nigerian Law School Exam

The Nigerian Law School was set up by the Federal Government of Nigeria by the Legal Education Act of 1962.The establishment of the Law School became necessary because of the need to have a Law School which will cure the deficiency in the training of Nigerians who obtained qualifications in Law abroad and to provide the much needed practical training to those aspiring to become Legal Practitioners in Nigeria.
